The International Festival of Oriental Dances is planning its 12th edition in Lausanne, at the Casino de Montbenon, from October 6 to 8. Bringing together some 80 artists from the four corners of the world, the three-day program will be punctuated with workshops, conferences and performances, as well as a “gala evening worthy of Thousand and one Night», to showcase all the richness and variety of Oriental dances.
This festival led by Maryam Ribordy, Iranian-Swiss of origin and one of the rare professional dancers and choreographers of international level in Switzerland, celebrates all the riches of the countries of the Eastern world: from the Maghreb to India, including the Egyptian cradle or the cultures of the Persian Gulf. “Oriental dances are very varied: the form can be noble and classic, or more folkloric, with different costumes and accessories. Many cultural influences have permeated them, drawn from traditional styles (Bollywood, flamenco, salsa, samba) or more modern (jazz, tribal fusion, contemporary dance),” she notes. The event will notably welcome the Ukrainian dancer, Natasha Korotkina, known worldwide thanks to her appearances in several talent shows Europeans, the international dancer Mohamed Kazafy from Cairo, the Lille dancer Rajaa Dussart, and for her last scene, the Tanoura dancer, Ibrahim Hassan.
Dancing with a whirling dervish
The strong point of the festival lies in its participatory formula: the public is invited to moments of exchange and initiations with the artists. Like the rare opportunity of a tanoura (whirling dervish) dance masterclass led by Ibrahim Hassan. But also thematic, technical and choreographic workshops which will take place at the Academy of Oriental Dances in Lausanne. The opening evening, for its part, offers an original format: between conference, show and jam session, with the participation of Soraya Baccouche, dancer and doctoral student in sociology of the arts at the University of Strasbourg, who will speak regarding origin of oriental dance and the Western view of oriental dances.
