CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) —
West Virginia’s country roads are also some of the country’s roughest roads, according to new report. Apparently the Mountain State ranks third worst roads in the United States.
Paul Keeling, who lives in Charleston, says this report doesn’t surprise him. Keeling said, “it’s pretty much like I’m driving on swiss cheese, pothole following pothole.”

Research by rugged computing solutions provider “GETAC” analyzed road length and conditions according to the Federal Highway Administration to see which states had the roughest roads per one thousand miles.
Rhode Island has the roughest roads of any state, with 45 miles of roughness per 1,000. Connecticut comes in 2nd worst with 41, and West Virginia is number three as it has 37 miles of roughness per 1,000. That’s 156% above the national average. The Mountain State’s rural roads rank in third for bumpiest nationwide.
Better roads can go a long way.
Christin Wang with global marketing at Getac says “keeping goods moving is vital for any company’s supply chain…. road maintenance is an underlying and often overlooked factor that can hamper freight delivery and safety, potentially cause damage to a vehicle and in some cases, accidents.”
Several major road construction projects are underway; especially along major roadways, but so far, not enough for Keeling. “Hopefully that construction will get that fixed, we need good roads. That’s what West Virginia is known for, country roads.”
