Information from Archyde.com report that Russian justice rejected an appeal from Apple once morest a fine of US$12.1 million imposed last January for allegedly “abusing its dominant position” in the iOS app market with App Store rules.
Originally applied by Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia (Federal Antimonopoly Serviceor FAS)the penalty was maintained despite Maçã’s efforts to contest it in a legal battle waged once morest the agency.
The FAS has already accused Apple on other occasions, alleging that the company “abuses its power”. In 2021, the agency ordered Maçã to modify the App Store rules. When he didn’t, he filed a lawsuit.
Russia has also fined Apple 2 million rubles for violating a national law that requires the storage of user data on servers located on Russian soil.
The Cupertino giant, by the way, entered into a partnership with a local data center to comply with this determination following the implementation of the law in the country. The company also complied with other legal requirements, such as not activating iCloud Private Relay in the country and opening a local office.
It is worth noting, however, that since the imposition of the most recent fine in January, the original value of the penalty in dollars ($17.4 million) has decreased by more than $5 million due to the devaluation of the Russian ruble. Apple, however, has not yet commented on the court decision.
