The French-speaking Court of Appeal in Brussels has temporarily suspended the return to France of Salah Abdeslam as part of summary proceedings. Salah Abdeslam must serve an “incompressible” (non-reducible) life sentence in France following the Paris Assize Court found him guilty of the attacks of November 13, 2015.
Michel Bouchat, one of Salah Abdeslam’s lawyers, decodes this decision: “The judgment pronounced today prohibits the Belgian state from transferring Salah Abdeslam to France, under penalty of 10,000 euros per day, pending a judgment on the merits of our client’s request. Or, failing that, a decision by France to authorize Salah Abdeslam to serve his sentence in Belgium.”
Given the delays before the appeals chambers in Belgium, Salah Abdeslam might stay several months, even several years in Belgium.
Abdeslam was sentenced to an irreducible life sentence by the specially composed Paris Assize Court. The Brussels Assize Court also found him guilty of the attacks of March 22, 2016. But for its sanction, the court referred to the twenty-year prison sentence that Abdeslam had already received for the Forest shooting. .
