Thiruvananthapuram ∙ The second night following the Chandrayaan 3 mission began on the moon. It’s been a month since the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover went to sleep following their first 10 days on Earth collecting research data. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will continue to try to wake up Vikram and Pragyan when the sun rises once more on the moon in two weeks, although the chances of awakening are slim.
Pragyan and Vikram had achieved the main objectives of the Chandrayaan 3 mission before the 4th of last month. It would have been a ‘bonus’ for the Chandrayaan mission if Pragyan and Vikram had woken up following one night on the moon (equivalent to 14 days on Earth). ISRO has stated that the chances of awakening are low.
Future lunar missions will target scientific study instruments that can survive the extreme cold of the moon and spacecraft that can collect lunar samples and return them.
