Traffic Restrictions and Impact on Ixelles Good Move Plan: Vilvoorde Viaduct Construction Updates

Traffic limited to a single lane

During construction, traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction instead of two. The construction site is planned during the summer holidays. The first phase will last one month. This will involve reinforcing the roof of the sluice towards La Cambre. The sluice towards the center will therefore be modified in order to accommodate a lane of traffic in each direction (towards the center and towards La Cambre).

Queues, reduced speed, narrowed lanes on the Vilvoorde viaduct… but no workers on the horizon: the authorities explain

The second phase provides for the reinforcement of the roof of the center direction sluice. Traffic towards La Cambre is restored in the sluice towards La Cambre, the capacity of which is now limited to one lane. Traffic heading towards the center is diverted on the surface via a temporary road development next to the tunnels, in the parking area. Before and following this summer closure, the tunnels will also be completely closed on certain nights, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sundays to Thursdays.

Impact on the Ixelles Good Move plan

The work undertaken requires the installation of a strip under these two tunnels, in each direction; almost definitively. Brussels Mobility ensures that the current volume of traffic allows the implementation of a definitive band. This project will impact several neighboring projects including the Ixelles mobility plan.

“We will have to review either the tempo or the measures of our mobility plan,” comments the mayor of Ixelles, Christos Doulkeridis (Ecolo). “We must not make things more complicated and take security issues into account.”

“The development of Good Move is the fruit of a small oligarchy”

The mayor of the City of Brussels, Philippe Close (PS), in any case does not share the vision of the Region. “Putting on a tape for the duration of the project is normal. But we never said it was final. Avenue Louise deserves a global reflection. We are not going to leave props for ten years. I understand the urgency. But for a definitive project, real reflection is needed.”

The socialist also asks for details on how Brussels Mobility will postpone traffic. It also requires that BM organize consultation with local residents and traders. “It’s all well and good to say everywhere that we must have citizen participation… We still have to follow through on our convictions.” Message sent to Ecolo/Groen…
