At least 25 people drowned when an overloaded boat capsized in Nigeria, we learned from an official source on Tuesday.

The boat carrying around fifty passengers, most of them traders, left the village of Kasabo on Monday to go to Yauri, in the north-west of Kebbi State.

The accident happened midway, according to Bala Muhammad Gaga, Yauri local government chairman.

“At least 25 people drowned. We are trying to determine the exact number of passengers who were on board. 13 people were rescued on Tuesday and two bodies were recovered,” Gaga told Anadolu Agency.

He said the navy and local divers were part of the rescue team.

“The rescue operation will continue until we have pulled all the victims out of the waters,” Gaga said at the scene of the accident.

Governor Nasir Idris expressed his sympathy to the community.

“I invite you to consider what happened as an expression of the will of Almighty Allah, which no one can question, and to accept it with faith. We should also continue to pray to Allah to grant them mercy,” he said in a message.

Boat accidents are common in Nigeria, where rivers overflow during the rainy season.
