Piet De Groote announced his resignation as mayor of Knokke-Heist on Tuesday evening during the program “De Tafel van Gert” on the private channel Play4. He added that he would submit his resignation letter on Wednesday and was considering launching a new party.
Knokke-Heist is currently going through a political crisis following a report from Audit Vlaanderen on possible conflicts of interest in the municipality of the Coast. Former alderman Kris Demeyere himself resigned because he was allegedly cited in this audit.
On Saturday, following a secret vote within the local Gemeentebelangen (Communal Interests) list, it appeared that Mayor De Groote might not be the head of the list in the next municipal elections in 2024.
During the talk show “De Tafel van Gert”, Mr De Groote announced his resignation, adding that the vote for the head of the Gemeentebelangen list was a “farce”, before attacking the way in which the party is ruled. “I have been insisting on the statutes and regulations for months. Our president became president without a vote,” he said.
Piet De Groote became mayor of Knokke-Heist following the death of Leopold Lippens in 2021. “No one dared to contradict him. With me, it’s a little more flexible,” he added.
