With its ultra-realistic avatars and virtual reality headsets, Meta might make it possible to virtually revive missing people. His boss still remains level-headed on the subject.
A missing grandmother or child who appears before your eyes? It’s an idea that runs through the head of Mark Zuckerberg, the boss of Meta. Interviewed by podcaster Lex Fridman, he discussed this possibility through the metaverse, nevertheless emphasizing that it was a “complex question”.
“If someone has lost a loved one and is grieving, interacting or reliving certain memories might be useful” indicates Mark Zuckerberg, while recognizing that it is necessary to find “a point of balance”.
Because in the same way that artificial intelligence chatbots can sometimes make you lose your mind, chatting with an avatar of a loved one might be a confusing experience, carrying risks for your mental health. Especially since Meta has succeeded in developing ultra-realistic avatars, which the boss himself presented last year, equipped with one of his virtual reality headsets.

Beyond the reproduction of the face, the artificial intelligence developed by the company might make it possible to communicate with the missing person… at the risk of no longer finding the boundary between the virtual and reality.
“I’m not an expert on the subject, so I think we should study this and understand it in more detail,” Mark Zuckerberg ended up tempering, still during his interview with Lex Fridman.
At the end of September, Meta announced the launch, on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, of AI-powered chatbots reproducing the personalities of certain stars, including Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton, and YouTuber MrBeast. Again raising fears around the psychological repercussions of these tools on users.
