France Launches HPV Vaccination Campaign for School Children in Effort to Improve Vaccination Rates

France has launched a human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination campaign for all girls and boys in secondary schools across France. The country has one of the lowest vaccination rates once morest HPV in Europe.

France has now decided that school children will be given the opportunity to have a first vaccination in December and the second six months later.

Although two vaccinations are required to be fully effective, HPV vaccinations are not mandatory in France. Parents can make this decision themselves for their children.

This campaign offers “secondary school students in the 5th grade a vaccine that prevents up to 90 percent of infections,” said Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau on X on Monday.

The vaccination rate once morest HPV in France is one of the lowest in the EU: according to the French National Cancer Institute, by 2022, 41.5 percent of 16-year-old girls had received a full vaccination. The vaccination rate among boys is significantly lower at just 8.5 percent.

People infected with HPV often show no symptoms, but the infections can lead to precancerous lesions or cancer of the vulva, cervix, vagina, or anus.

One of the only existing vaccines is Gardasil 9. In September, France’s National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) said it would carry out “enhanced monitoring” of the vaccine’s side effects.

“The undesirable side effects most commonly observed with vaccination with Gardasil 9,” such as pain at the injection site or headache, “are not serious in the vast majority of cases and resolve spontaneously within a few days, although they may be bothersome,” it said ANSM continues.

In February, President Emmanuel Macron promised to launch this campaign to improve vaccination coverage once morest these viruses. They are responsible for more than 6,000 new cases of cancer in France every year.

One in August in the trade magazine The Lancet Published study found that almost one in three men worldwide is infected with at least one HPV. This once once more illustrates how important it is to include men in vaccination strategies.
