Car manufacturers are lining up for ‘green steel’. The problem is that most steel is still forged using fossil fuels.
Car brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and BMW are willing to pay more money for ‘green steel’: steel that is made in an environmentally friendly way. But without large-scale supply of green hydrogen, a large part of that steel is still initially made with natural gas. This is what European steel producers say to the news agency Bloomberg.
Several steel producers are looking at options to make the industry greener. But today, billions of tons of coal are still burned producing steel. Production currently accounts for 7 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.
Major German steel producers such as ThyssenKrupp and Salzgitter are focusing on the use of green hydrogen, but it will take some time before it is actually used. Most projects using hydrogen to make steel are still in their early stages.
Tata Steel in IJmuiden also announced years ago that it wanted to emit less and less CO2 by 2030. The factory initially also wanted to focus on green hydrogen.
At the beginning of July, it became clear that the company was considering overhauling its sustainability plans, because the hydrogen plan turned out to be relatively expensive. But the alternatives turned out to be unacceptable. At the end of July, the steel manufacturer made the decision: the company will make steel with hydrogen following all.
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Tata Steel had not yet made a decision on the use of green hydrogen. This information has now been added.
