Since October 1, in Flanders, it is obligatory to drive following the indications of a GPS as part of the practical driving test. Candidate drivers will therefore not only have to prove that they can follow a route while respecting the road signs, but also by following the indications of a navigation device. Driver candidates must be able to operate the device smoothly and correctly and demonstrate the ability to make decisions independently.
It is therefore now a compulsory element, but only in Flanders. Applicants can choose to use their vehicle’s GPS or a free app on their smartphone. For those who do not have a device, the examiner will provide one.
The exam adapts to technological developments. This is not yet the case in Wallonia or Brussels. Is this new test useful?
“With all the work that is going on, from time to time, they block streets, they change the signs,… If the GPS is not updated, we end up somewhere where we shouldn’t “, says Michel Prime, driving school instructor.
“A candidate who would never have used a GPS before obtaining his license risks being a little lost once he has his license in his pocket”, underlines Benoît Godart, the spokesperson for VIAS.
Don’t panic for those who have never used one. Instructions are provided during driving lessons. “A student does not have enough experience. He drives 20 hours and over this time, he must already know how to handle the car and know the traffic. Following the GPS is not always easy”, believes Michel Prime.
In Wallonia, examiners already have the authorization but not the obligation to evaluate a candidate on their mastery of GPS.
