Some cables are not working with CarPlay on iPhones 15; BMW cars can “kill” NFC chips in new models

As we well know, one of the biggest new features in the line iPhone 15 is the adoption of the input USB-C, which came with a series of advantages such as the possibility of recharging multiple devices with a single cable. This does not mean, however, that this transition has been wonderful, especially for users of CarPlay.

According to MacRumors, as many cars (including recent models) still have USB-A ports instead of USB-C on their dashboards, many people have been forced to use USB-C to USB-A cables to connect their iPhones to the vehicle’s multimedia system . Apple’s latest smartphones, it’s worth remembering, come with USB-C to USB-C cables in their boxes.

Turns out, according to multiple reports on Reddit and on the Apple support forums, CarPlay has not worked with many of these USB-C to USB-A cables, even though they support data transfer and are from well-known brands. Charging, on the other hand, continues to work without any problems.

A Reddit user cited by the site even said he had contacted Apple support regarding the problem, who recommended using the company’s official USB-C to USB-C cable with an adapter. Before that, however, he tested several other cables from brands like Sony and Nintendo, some of which worked and others didn’t.

After trying two good quality cables, I called Apple support to talk regarding it. They went through several potential solutions that didn’t work. The call ended with me agreeing to try the cable supplied with the phone, following purchasing a suitable adapter. When I got home, I tried four more cables. Three of them worked, being from Sony, Samsung and Nintendo (I think). Today I tried the Apple cable + adapter and it also worked. The good quality cables (three of them) previously gave me no problems, mainly for charging, but also for connecting to a high-speed PC and a VR headset. Connecting iPhone to Windows PC worked fine with one of them (I was able to connect to my phone in iTunes). I suspect there is a specification that the three “good quality” cables do not have. In this case, I don’t know if it’s the car or the iPhone that counts for this specification.

Other users, however, reported that CarPlay continued to not work even when using an official Apple cable and adapter combined. One specific report, however, said that keeping a VPN enabled while trying to launch CarPlay may cause the feature to not work:

Hi, I just went to my car to check and I have the same problem. If a VPN is enabled when the car is started, the car will not work with CarPlay. If the VPN is off, CarPlay starts, if I turn the VPN on once more, CarPlay crashes.

A reader of MacRumors who contacted Apple regarding the problem. According to him, the company would already be working on a fix for the problem — which will probably come in the form of a software update.

Do you have a BMW? Careful!

The iPhone 15 line’s problems with cars don’t end there. Still according to the MacRumorsseveral readers are reporting that the NFC chipNear field communicationor proximity field communication.”>1 of its devices would have stopped working completely following placing the devices to recharge at the wireless charging stations of the German brand’s vehicles.

It is not yet known what has caused this problem, which has basically made devices unable to make contactless payments via Apple Pay and other functions.

More specifically, placing the iPhone to recharge at a BMW charging station would be taking the iPhones directly to the recovery mode of iOS. After that, it is no longer possible to do anything with the NFC chip, which includes registering new cards with Apple Pay.

Some users reported being able to exchange their iPhone following the “death” of the NFC chip was discovered. However, the problem happened once more with the new devices.

Apparently, this problem is only affecting models in the iPhone 15 line. When asked, Apple has not yet commented on the matter.
