USA tests simultaneous alert for millions of cell phones, TVs and radios on Wednesday

2023-10-02 19:25:00

Cell phones, TVs and radios across the United States will receive a simultaneous test alert from the so-called National Wireless Emergency Alert System of the country, precisely at 2:20 pm, East Coast time (3:20 pm in Brasília).

The message will be sent by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), who want to make sure that the system is operational and correct possible failures, predicting the case of a real alert.

The country already uses a system of this type to warn residents of certain locations, for example, regarding tornadoes, recommending that they stay at home or avoid a certain region. The message “This is a test of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is required” will be displayed in either English or Spanish, depending on the cell phone system language.

According to the White House, the messages will be accompanied by a vibration and a very specific “ringtone”which promises to be quite uncomfortable and unpleasant, so that everyone runs towards the device and sees the message.

The message will also be broadcast on radio and TV across the country, marking the seventh test of this system. Alerts on cell phones should last around 30 minutes if users do not turn off the notification immediately. If any unforeseen event or accident occurs before Wednesday, the test will be postponed until October 11th.

And do you also think that Brazil should implement a system of this type, in order to try to warn regarding more natural disasters?
