Saturday morning, the residents of a few generally quiet streets in Uccle, near the Churchill roundregarding, woke up to a strange surprise: a stranger burned the camera of their intercom with a blowtorch. Political gesture of an activist who protests once morest the omnipresence of video surveillance or act of a psychologically fragile person?
It only takes two seconds and a portable torch to make the Plexiglas window that protects the lens of the intercom camera opaque and therefore render said camera unusable. This is what the inhabitants of this Uccle street discovered, despite themselves. Half a dozen houses, all on the same sidewalk, were victims of the same stranger. He apparently acted very quickly, walking with a determined step. It all happened on Saturday, around 8 a.m. How do they know? Easy, they just had to look at the images recorded by their camera. They were therefore also able to transmit the images of the arsonist to the police.
While walking around the neighborhood, we discover other burnt cameras. The pattern seems a bit random: some houses are targeted, others, right next to them, are spared, without being able to find a clear reason. At a bailiff’s, one camera was torched, the other camera, right next to it, remains intact.
This Monday, the police in the Uccle / Watermael-Boitsfort / Auderghem area explained that they had received around ten reports. But this is not the suspect’s first attempt. Recently, he had already set fire, with the same modus operandi, to trash cans and flower boxes. He also attacked facade panels of medical offices. The agents therefore believe that the author is a person, known to their services, victim of psychiatric accidents.
Whatever the arsonist’s motivation, law enforcement takes the matter very seriously. As Laurent Masset, spokesperson for the Uccle/Watermael-Boitsfort/Auderghem police zone, explains: “ What worried us was the high number of incidents in such a short time. This is what motivates us to arrest the author of these facts as quickly as possible. So that he stops before committing more serious damage, or even being responsible for a fire. All our teams are on the go.“
The police therefore hope to be able to arrest him in the coming hours.
