The Regional Health Agency confirmed this Monday the two cases of indigenous dengue fever reported in Bourg-lès-Valence. These are the first cases of the year in the Auvergne/Rhône-Alpes region. This means that the two people, members of the same family, were bitten by a tiger mosquito having previously bitten an infected person. The regional authority specifies that it is awaiting results for a third suspected case.
The entomological investigation carried out last Friday confirmed the presence of the tiger mosquito in the area of residence of the two people concerned. A mosquito control operation must take place during the night from Monday October 2 to Tuesday October 3, between 2 and 5 a.m., in order to limit the risks of transmission. Residents were warned via flyers left in mailboxes or posted up. Less than a month ago, a nighttime mosquito control operation had already been carried out on the other side of the Rhône, in Cornas, for a case of dengue fever.
The Auvergne/Rhône-Alpes Regional Health Agency also specifies that a door-to-door epidemiological investigation will be conducted. It will take place on Wednesday October 4 and Thursday October 5 in Bourg-lès-Valence, with residents of the area concerned. Agents from the ARS and Public Health France will seek to ensure that residents have not been contaminated by a tiger mosquito, by making them aware of the various symptoms and the action to follow if they appear.
As a reminder, among the symptoms that may suggest dengue fever: a fever above 38.5°C of sudden onset, associated with at least one of these signs: headache, muscle, joint or lower back pain, sore throat, runny nose, difficulty breathing or infected wounds. Still according to the ARS, “Dengue is a generally benign illness whose symptoms, similar to those of the flu (high fever, joint pain, severe headache) can be temporarily disabling”.
