Retirement of Nacer Bouhanni: A Reflection on 27 Years of Competitive Cycling

“Dear close friends, supporters, I announce my retirement following 27 years of competitive cycling. I have been thinking carefully regarding this decision for several months,” wrote Bouhanni.

This sudden departure is linked to the heavy fall that Nacer Bouhanni suffered during the Tour of Turkey in April 2022, when he collided with a careless spectator. “After my serious accident last year which cost me a serious cervical fracture and a very long rehabilitation, I had become a shadow of myself. I fought body and soul to try to find my level in vain. Life decided otherwise.”

During a career that began in 2010 with the FDJ team until 2014, then with Cofidis (2015-2019) and finally with Arkéa Samsic (2019-2023), the sprinter accumulated 70 victories. He notably won 3 stages of the Tour of Italy, 3 stages of the Tour of Spain, 3 stages of the Critérium du Dauphiné, and 3 stages of Paris-Nice. Bouhanni raised his arms for the last time on March 27, 2022, on La Roue Tourangelle.

“I started cycling at the age of 6, it very quickly became a great passion,” he said. “Seventy victories, ups, downs, beautiful and less beautiful encounters, joys, disappointments, but I will only keep the best.”
