Every month, Europe 1 in partnership with Circana looks back on food inflation, through its control basket, which brings together 12 everyday products from major brands or distributor brands such as rice, eggs and laundry detergent. For the first time in months, food prices have seen a real drop in price.

Europe 1 reveals its inflation basket for the month of October this Monday. The Europe 1 basket, in partnership with panelist Circana, is a selection of 12 food and hygiene products to try to keep up with price increases on supermarket shelves. Good news, for the first time in months, foodstuffs are experiencing a real drop in price.

The beginning of a lull?

This drop, announced by INSEE, is the strongest since the start of the Europe 1 basket system: more than two euros less over one month. The price of the Europe 1 basket thus returns to its May level. This summer’s inflation is erased, a general trend observed by Emily Mayer, director of studies at panelist Circana. “What is certain is that the drop that we are seeing this month in the basket is visible overall. It is the beginning of a lull. We will have to wait for the end of the trade negotiations which will soon start to find out if this price drop continues or if there might still be some price increases next year,” she explains.

In September, the price of pasta finally fell: a kilo of national brand spaghetti now costs five cents less than in August. Same thing for 250 grams of national brand honey. The price of a 250 gram pack of private label butter has fallen by three cents. Shampoo and laundry detergent are experiencing greater declines. On this last product, the traditionally larger promotions in September have had their effect.
