”We are approximately 8 degrees above seasonal norms. The absolute record for October 2 should not, however, be beaten,” explains Pascal Mormal, meteorologist. Tomorrow, a rainy front should lower these “summer” temperatures for the next few days but they will then rise once more at the end of the week to exceed 20 degrees once more. “What is notable is the prolongation of the mild weather that we experienced in September,” underlines the expert from the Royal Meteorological Institute.

According to him, these high temperatures can be explained by the presence of a depression over the Atlantic as well as an anticyclone over central Europe. We must also add to this the Earth which itself has warmed up. This is a phenomenon that does not only affect Belgium. We can see in particular that in France, 30 degrees have been approached or even exceeded locally.
Pascal Mormal no longer even says he is “surprised” by such deviations from seasonal norms. “In recent years, we are almost always beyond. The 10 hottest years were following 2005, the top 5 was following 2010.”

These “abnormal” episodes tend to be more and more common. “This is obviously a particularly worrying phenomenon. Such a rise in temperatures can have serious repercussions on nature and the environment. Extreme weather conditions are increasing across Europe. Just think of the devastating fires which have ravaged several countries this summer or the tragic floods which hit Belgium in 2021”, recalls Pascal Mormal. “We might think that it is pleasant to have milder temperatures in autumn or winter but that also means that it will be hotter during the other seasons and they will be less bearable,” he adds.
Finally, the meteorologist predicts that this month of October should see the mild weather continue. It might also be that November will follow the same trend even if it is still too early to be able to say so.
