Daniel Ricciardo admits he has no regrets regarding his F1 career and believes difficult moments are a case of learning lessons. Ricciardo, 34, will miss the opening part of the 2023 season following agreeing to an early end to his three-year contract with McLaren. Although the partnership with McLaren achieved victory at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, it has otherwise been a frustrating period.
There’s no simple answer to exactly why the relationship didn’t work out, and in the fast-paced world of F1, neither side might afford to give more time. But through the process, Ricardo was able to take time to reflect on his life and career and accept what he had accomplished. “I think I’m probably at an age now where I don’t look back and regret anything,” Ricciardo said. “It’s not necessarily a loss, it’s a lesson learned. Of course I would have liked to have won more in my career, but then winning might have become boring and I might have stopped appreciating it.” I’m not going to change anything. As long as I can continue to grow and get better with experience, I’m pretty happy.” Ricciardo has won a total of eight races in his career, seven of which The win is with Red Bull. He has spent half of his life abroad away from his family, but as he gets older his family becomes more and more important. It left him with a degree of guilt for having been forced to live a selfish life in pursuit of his career. But in return, he says, he got to experience some of the biggest moments of his life with his parents. “When you’re a kid, you kind of want to distance yourself from your parents and be independent, but then at some point you start thinking, OK, now I want to spend more time with my family,” Ricardo explained. “I realize the importance of the role my parents play in my life, and the older I get, the more I appreciate my parents, for example. I ultimately owe them the opportunities I was given. “So I was able to share some of my success and when I won Monaco in 2018, it was one of the coolest days of my life and one of the greatest achievements. I think it was really special to have them in Monaco, one of the countries, to celebrate it with me.” “It made the days away from them worth it. It made all the stress and everything I put them through racing every weekend worth it. “Being able to share that moment and see how happy they were made it. But knowing how happy they were, I feel less guilty regarding having lived my life so selfishly as a sportsman and a competitor.”
