Delhaize Announces Takeover of 19 Supermarkets by Independent Entrepreneurs

Delhaize announces the takeover of a third series of supermarkets under its own management by independent entrepreneurs. This time, there are 19 supermarkets which will switch to the independent model in the coming weeks. Following the announcement of 32 supermarkets in August and September, 51 supermarkets have now begun the transition to an independently operated supermarket.

Delhaize also published the names of the buyers in a press release. We can notably cite the name of the family of actress and radio presenter Kim Van Oncen. They take over the Ekeren store. Van Oncen already operates an AD Delhaize in Putte-Kapellen with his brother and has announced a new store in Essen.

Shortly following the announcement of Delhaize’s franchising plans, Ms. Van Oncen expressed her reservations. “I wonder if this solves the problem or if it just shifts it to the new independents,” she told Het Nieuwsblad at the time. It later turned out that she was ultimately considering taking over a store.

Nine of the 19 buyers already own one or more Delhaize stores, five are former employees of the supermarket chain and five are new buyers. According to Delhaize, “the phased acquisition plan is proceeding as planned”. Further announcements will be made in the coming months, it seems.
