In the first three quarters of 2023, 306 people have already died in accidents on Austria’s roads. In the previous year there were a total of 304 traffic deaths between January 1st and October 1st, and significantly fewer in the comparable period of 2021 with 276 fatalities. Eight people were killed in accidents last week, according to Interior Ministry figures.
Last week, three motorcycle drivers, two pedestrians, a tractor-trailer driver, a car driver and an e-bike driver died in traffic accidents. Four people died last week on a state road B, three on a state road L and one on a motorway. There were two traffic deaths each in Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Styria and one each in Salzburg and Tyrol.
The presumed main cause of the accident was inattention/distraction in four cases and priority violation, overtaking and inadequate speed in one case each. The cause of a fatal traffic accident has not yet been clarified. One fatal accident was a solo accident and two fatalities were foreign nationals.
In a year-on-year comparison, there have been significantly more traffic deaths, particularly in Carinthia, with 25 so far than up to October 1, 2022, when there were 15. In Salzburg, too, the number of traffic deaths rose to 28 from January 1st to October 1st, 2023, compared to 17 the year before. There was once more a significant decrease in Vienna, where eight people have been killed in accidents so far in 2023, compared to 16 in the comparable period of 2022. The highest number of road deaths recorded so far in a federal state comparison is Lower Austria with 72, followed by 59 each in Upper Austria and Styria.
