For its 9th edition, the Sunnyside Festival is coming to Reims from October 11 to 15 to offer, in a friendly atmosphere, the best of African-American music to all generations.
Not yet 10 years old, but already quite a grown-up. Let it be said, the Sunnyside Festival is therefore back this October to celebrate jazz and blues in Reims, and all their variations, soul, funk or even hip-hop, thus giving a wide panorama of African-American music. At the helm, the Reims association aptly named Jazzus has, this year, chosen to concentrate the programming even more. “A long time ago, we organized a jazz festival in Reims over a month,” recalls Jean Delestrade, conductor of Jazzus. Gradually, we moved closer to current codes to offer a more concentrated event.” While the last three editions of the festival took place over a week, this year, the festival grouped its offerings over five days, “in order to immerse the public in the Sunnyside spirit”.
Five days of festival instead of seven, therefore, for as many artists on stage and moments to share. Now themed, the evening concerts are all organized at the Cartonnerie. “Sunnyside is not just jazz,” recalls Jean Delestrade, “so much so that by editorializing the evenings, it is clearer for the public and to attract their curiosity.” The festival will open on Wednesday October 11 with a “New jazz” evening marked by the presence of Englishman Kamal Williams, a worthy representative of a London scene that combines jazz, electro and hip-hop. On Thursday, October 12, the public will vibrate to “The voice of Ella”, that of Queen Fitzgerald, whose standards will be covered by the flamboyant American Robin McKelle. Friday October 13, the festival will take the pulse of the African scene, during an “Africa today” evening where Kutu, Fulu Miziki Kolektiv and DJ Cheetah will transcend ancestral and current music. And Saturday October 14, there will be a double dose, on the one hand with an “American jazz trip”, in the company of David Murray, Becca Stevens and Immanuel Wilkins, and on the other hand with a “Sunny soul club” which will be provided by the groove of the nine members of Echoes of Memphis, accompanied, exceptionally, by a high-flying guest: the Franco-American singer China Moses!
A particularly exciting series of concerts to which are added much more intimate offerings, “designed as special moments of encounter between the artists and the public”. Accessible free of charge, these concerts in very restricted groups will take place at the Châtivesle auction house, the Saint-Marcoul chapel and the Carnegie library. They will see Fanny Lasfargues & Rafaëlle Rinaudo, Daniel Erdmann & Nicolas Fayol, Séverine Morfin and Mamie Jotax parade. The Sunnyside program would not be complete without the Sunny Kids program which, as its name suggests, is aimed at children. On Saturday October 14, young ears will have the opportunity to enjoy adapted shows, all organized at the Cellier, in the company of Marion Rampal, the Reims duo formed by Tommaso Montagnani and Jean-Baptiste and the Chien Assis collective. The icing on the double bass, on the same day, La Philharmonie des enfants, a space designed to play, explore, listen, experience and feel the music of La Philharmonie de Paris, will also be set up at the Cellier.
Finally, to be completely exhaustive, La Kermesse du Sunnyside will close the festival, on Sunday October 15, in the warm and musical atmosphere of the Shed.
