Cot cot codet! But what might your talkative hen mean when she clucks? Is she hungry, afraid, angry or, on the contrary, happy? Japanese scientists may have the answer to this question that plagues gallinaceae owners who are unable to speak the same language as their animal. They have developed artificial intelligence capable of interpreting the emotional states of chickens through their vocalizations. In a paper that has not yet been peer-reviewed, the researchers say they use a “state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technique” called “deep emotional analysis learning.” The device, through complex mathematical algorithms, learns and adapts to new speech patterns over time.

To train the AI, the researchers gathered no fewer than 80 chickens and recorded them one by one under various conditions. They then surrounded themselves with a team of eight animal behaviorists and veterinary surgeons who, during the analysis of the 200 hours of recording, provided them with precise information on the emotional state of the poultry, according to the New York Post. They then fed the AI with 100 hours of audio that they had previously associated with six emotions. When they provided 100 new hours of recordings to the machine, it was able to recognize the correct emotion in 80% of cases, they assure.

More empathetic and effective interactions

Scientists are now planning to create a free application that would allow breeders to better understand their chickens. They also hope that their study will help decipher the emotions of other animals. “By bridging the gap between human and animal communication, we believe that our research will pave the way for more empathetic and effective interactions with the animal kingdom,” conclude, with a touch of utopianism, the three researchers in their article.
