On Sunday, a congress of the Sacred Union coalition, which included political heavyweights, unanimously nominated Félix Tshisekedi.

The outgoing president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix Antoine Tshisekediwas officially designated on Sunday as a candidate for the presidential election on December 20 by the ruling political coalition, the Sacred Union.

Félix Tshisekedi is seeking a second term in this vast country, leading global supplier of cobalt and third-largest copper producer, following winning a first term in a contested 2018 vote.

His five-year term was overshadowed by economic difficulties, the Covid-19 pandemic, Ebola epidemics and persistent insecurity, particularly in the East where M23 rebels took control of certain territoriesleading to a breakdown in relations with neighboring Rwanda.

Sunday, a congress of the Sacred Union coalition, which includes political heavyweights like Defense Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba and his colleague from the Economy, Vital Kamerhe, unanimously nominated Félix Tshisekedi.

“Félix Tshisekedi has been designated candidate for the presidency of the Republic in the name of the Sacred Union of the Nation,” declared André Mbata, spokesperson for the head of state’s party, to the cheers of a gathered crowd under a marquee at the Palais du Peuple in Kinshasa.

Félix Tshisekedi, the son of former Congolese opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi, promised to eradicate corruption and authoritarianism and rejected criticism saying he failed to deliver on his promises.

One of his main political opponents, Martin Fayulu, who came second in 2018, confirmed his candidacy on Saturday.
