Continued US Support for Ukraine: Biden Urges Congress to Decide on New Aid Quickly

US President Joe Biden has assured Ukraine of continued US support and at the same time called on Congress to decide on new aid for Kiev as quickly as possible. At the moment, the money will continue to flow to the country attacked by Russia, but there is not much time left, Biden warned on Sunday.

The day before, Congress passed an interim budget until November 17th without any new money for Ukraine in order to avert a government shutdown. But Biden assured Ukraine and the US’s western allies that they might continue to count on Washington.

The vast majority of both parties – Democrats and Republicans, Senate and House of Representatives – support aid to Ukraine once morest Russia’s brutal war of aggression once morest Ukraine, Biden said. Referring to the budget dispute, he added: “Stop playing games. Get it done.”

But many lawmakers admit that the longer the war lasts, the more difficult it will be to get broad support for Ukraine aid in Congress. Resistance to this is growing, especially among Republicans.

Ukrainian President Zelensky once once more asked for help during his visit to Washington. There is still support from the USA, but the support is weakening.

Sep 22, 2023 | 01:28 minLast week, nearly half of Republicans in the House of Representatives voted to cut $300 million from a Defense Department spending package earmarked for training Ukrainian soldiers and weapons purchases. The money was later approved separately, but it was a clear signal of a changing mood among the Republicans. New aid for Ukraine was also removed from the interim budget passed on Saturday. MPs from both parties supported the compromise to prevent a shutdown. The big loser was Ukraine. Republican Senator Rick Scott said people in his state of Florida wanted to help Ukraine. But they also wanted to help Americans.

Is Western support for Kiev crumbling? There must now be “a round as quickly as possible” to discuss future support for Ukraine, said FDP politician Strack-Zimmermann on the outcome of the Slovakia election.

President Biden assured that Saturday’s decision was all regarding avoiding a government shutdown that would have threatened without bridge funding. Support for Ukraine is not in question. “Look at me,” he said, turning to the camera. “We’ll get it done.”

The Ukrainian government also expressed confidence. “Support for Ukraine remains steadfastly strong within the U.S. government and across both parties, in the chambers of the U.S. Congress and, most importantly, within the American people,” said a Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Oleg Nikolenko , on Sunday. He stressed that the bridge funding will have no impact on the billions of dollars in support that the US Congress has already committed.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in Kiev that he did not believe that the interim budget without aid to Ukraine would be the last word. “I have hope that this is not the final decision and that the US will continue to support Ukraine.”
