In mid-September, the National Frequency Agency called for the iPhone 12 to be withdrawn from stores on the grounds that the device exceeded the wave emission limits.
By checking the specific absorption rates (SAR) of the iPhone 12, the ANFR found that this smartphone exceeded the regulatory limit value corresponding to the energy that can be absorbed by 1.74 watts per kilogram (W/kg). by the human body.
Initially, Apple assured that the iPhone 12 met the standards defined around the world by numerous international organizations, and had planned to challenge the conclusions of the ANFR. But the decision taken in France to ban the marketing of the iPhone 12 began to create controversy in several countries of the European Union in the midst of the launch of the iPhone 15. The American giant therefore ended up preparing an update software update for all iPhone 12 users to calm things down.
In a press release published Friday September 29, the ANFR indicated that it had completed the verification of the update proposed by Apple for the iPhone 12: “The National Frequency Agency (ANFR) has completed the verification of the update proposed by the Apple company for the iPhone 12. Tests confirm that this software development allows this device to respect the “member” localized SAR limit value, and therefore to comply with the standards in force. The ANFR asked Apple to organize its deployment on all terminals.”
The tests carried out by the laboratory commissioned by the ANFR confirm that this update brings the localized “member” SAR into compliance with the regulatory limit of 4 W/kg.
The sales ban is now lifted, the ANFR has validated Apple’s update. From now on, Apple must distribute this software update to all iPhone 12 users in order to bring the equipment into compliance with current standards. This distribution will therefore make it possible to lift the marketing ban.
