London : Half of Britain’s bird species and a third of amphibians, reptiles and fungi are at risk of extinction, researchers warn. This is in the recently published annual State of the Nature report.

Humans are the main reason why species are threatened. Active bird flu, burning of fossil fuels and climate change are the challenges they face.
Climate change and deforestation are destroying natural habitats, including flowering plants. Since monitoring began in 1970, species in the UK have declined by an average of 19 per cent, the report said. Insects that help control pests, such as the two-spot ladybird, were found to have decreased by 34 percent.
A British media outlet reports that only a fifth of Britain’s farmland is covered by eco-friendly farming schemes and only 44 percent of its woodlands are managed sustainably. Environmentalists are demanding appropriate plans from the government to protect the animals.
