Specialized Center for Integrative Medicine (CEMI): Free Homeopathy, Acupuncture & Massage Therapy Services for Chronic Illnesses in Mexico City

The Ministry of Health of Mexico City (Sedesa) reported that the Specialized Center for Integrative Medicine (CEMI), which this October 1 celebrates its second anniversary, has provided 84,976 homeopathy, acupuncture, massage therapy and phytotherapy services. free, in support, mostly, of older adults with chronic illnesses.

“75% of the patients we serve are older adults with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, low back pain and gastrointestinal problems of all kinds,” explained the director of the unit, Adalberto Orozco Navarro.

These are alternatives to pharmacological treatments that help manage various conditions thanks to the patient’s physiological function, especially in people who do not respond to conventional treatments or have allergies to medications. Likewise, they relieve chronic and acute pain.

To date, CEMI has provided nine thousand massage therapy services, 27 thousand phytotherapy, 33,500 acupuncture and 15,172 homeopathy.

According to Adalberto Orozco, acupuncture helps level the biological mechanisms of the body through the placement of needles in the body. It is recommended for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, colitis, depression, anxiety, facial paralysis, high blood pressure and circulatory problems, among others.

Phytotherapy consists of the use of medicinal plants to treat or prevent conditions such as respiratory infections, ischemic heart diseases, digestive system problems, pneumonia, gallbladder stones and urinary tract infections.

Meanwhile, homeopathy uses small amounts of natural substances to cure diseases that, in large quantities, might cause negative symptoms. This alternative is used to treat physiological conditions and chronic diseases. It is recommended for intestinal, respiratory, urinary tract infections, ulcers, gastritis, amoebiasis, among others.

In addition to this, the CEMI carries out teaching and training activities in the management of medicinal plants aimed at the community, informative courses for health personnel and training diplomas. Research work is also carried out; A project on the use of alternative treatments in anxiety and metabolic syndrome is currently in development together with the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies (Conahcyt).

For people who wish to access CEMI’s free services, they must go to the facilities located at Manuel Carpio 470, Colonia Santo Tomás, in Miguel Hidalgo, from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The requirements are official identification, CURP and proof of address. Once you make an appointment, you can access the services free of charge 365 days a year, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
