At least 10 migrants were killed and regarding 15 others injured when the cargo truck they were traveling in crashed on a highway in southern Mexico near the border with Guatemala.
This incident is the latest in a series of migrant deaths in Mexico amid increasing numbers of migrants traveling towards the US border.
The truck accident occurred Sunday on a highway near the town of Bijiapan, regarding 110 miles (175 kilometers) from the Guatemalan border, the Chiapas state civil defense office said.
The office published photos showing a pickup truck with an open cargo box tilted on its side, and the victims lying on the side of the highway.
The office did not confirm the nationalities of the victims, but a prosecutor’s office employee said most of them were Cuban immigrants who were in passing cars. The employee was not authorized to speak.
It is also not clear how many immigrants are among the 15 infected. There was no immediate information available regarding their condition or nationalities.
Mexican authorities generally prohibit undocumented migrants from boarding buses, so those without the money to hire smugglers often walk on the sides of highways and ride onto passing trucks.
There have been a number of deaths among migrants over the past week.
A migrant from Ecuador died and 10 others from Colombia and Guatemala were injured in an accident Saturday while being transported for processing in a truck operated by the Mexican immigration agency.
Mexico’s National Migration Institute said the truck collided with a bus in the city of Mexicali, across the border from Calexico, California.
