Two years is the aging that the brain would undergo following a sleepless night. Researchers, using technologiesartificial intelligenceexamined the magnetic resonance (MRI) images of 134 healthy young adults. The results revealed that those who had deprived of sleep for 24 hours or more showed worrying signs of brain aging, including a reduction in brain volume and decreased activity in certain regions of the brain. More specifically, it was observed thatTotal sleep deprivation might increase predicted brain age by 1 to 2 years compared to actual age. However, a night of recovery sleep seemed to restore the brain to its normal state. These results suggest that total sleep deprivation has effects on brain structure similar to those of agingbut that these effects are reversible with adequate sleep.

This decrease is partly attributed to earlier wake-ups on Saturdays and Sundays, which now average 7 hours and 29 minutes, according to the National Institute of Sleep and Vigilance.
