History
FARGO, N.D. – South Dakota scored three first-half touchdowns and held on for a 24-19 victory over No. 2-ranked North Dakota State on Saturday, Sept. 30, before a homecoming crowd of 18,342 at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome.
Carter Bell scored on touchdown passes of 50 and 52 yards from Aidan Bouman and Keyondre Jones had an 8-yard TD run as the Coyotes jumped out to a 21-3 halftime lead.
Bouman finished 10-for-12 passing for 168 yards for USD, which improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. NDSU dropped to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Bison opened the second half with a 12-play, 89-yard scoring drive capped by Cole Payton’s 7-yard run. That was one of four 12-play drives in the second half as NDSU and USD both had only three possessions following halftime.
NDSU cut the deficit to 21-13 with 11:10 left in the game when Griffin Crosa converted a 26-yard field goal to cap a 16-play, 80-yard drive. Crosa connected from 37 yards in the first quarter.
USD drained the clock with a 12-play, 54-yard drive ending with Will Leyland’s 37-yard field goal to make it a two-possession game with 2:49 left.
The Bison went 75 yards in 12 plays to score with 36 seconds left on a 2-yard pass from Cam Miller to tight end Joe Stoffel. Miller’s PAT pass was unsuccessful to keep it a five-point game, and Kaedin Steindorf’s onside kick went out of bounds allowing the Coyotes to kneel out the clock.
Miller finished 18 of 25 passing for 154 yards and led NDSU with 12 carries for 65 yards. He completed his first six attempts and set a new NDSU record with 23 consecutive completions, breaking the mark of 21 set by Brock Jensen in 2013 once morest Kansas State (14) and Ferris State (7).
North Dakota State is on the road for the next two weeks. The Bison play Missouri State at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, and the game will be televised exclusively on ESPN+ as the Missouri Valley Football Conference Game of the Week.
