LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Even once morest another undisputed champion, Saul Canelo Alvarez had no intention of losing his titles. The Mexican imposed his law once morest the American Jermell Charlo on Saturday evening, in Las Vegas, to remain the undisputed super-middleweight champion.
Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) got the better of Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) by unanimous decision of the judges, who handed out cards of 119-108 , 118-109 and 118-109. Canelo quickly took control of the fight and he prevented Charlo from getting dangerously close to him during the fight.
“This Canelo…no one can beat this Canelo,” the winner said following the fight. I love boxing so much, it’s my life! »
It was the first fight between two undisputed men’s champions in the four-belt era. Charlo, the undisputed super welterweight champion at 154 pounds, moved up two divisions to face Canelo at 168 pounds. He was attempting to become the third undisputed champion in two weight classes at the same time, following Terence Crawford and Claressa Shields.
With this triumph, Canelo won his last three fights and reached the plateau of 60 victories in his career. He also inflicted the second defeat of his career on Charlo. Charlo was back in a ring for the first time since his victory once morest Brian Carlos Castano in May 2022.
“I feel like that wasn’t me in the ring. I don’t make excuses. We win and we lose. I am undisputed champion in my category. I dared to be big. I’m proud of myself,” Charlo said.
Canelo controls the fight
After a first round during which the two pugilists observed each other a lot, Canelo opened the machine a little in the second round. The Mexican made some nice combinations to gain rhythm.
Charlo gained momentum as the rounds went on and he launched some good combinations in his turn in the fourth attack to keep up with the pace set by Canelo. On each occasion, however, Canelo remained on the move and made sure to respond to his American opponent.
Canelo continued his work in the next round. He notably hit Charlo solidly with a left hook, before finishing the round convincingly with a few good shots. Charlo also delivered some good punches during the assault.
Canelo continued to gain momentum in the seventh round. Despite the few punches thrown by Charlo, the Mexican continued to advance towards his opponent and he executed some nice combinations to leave his opponent on the ropes. A right from Canelo forced Charlo to place a knee on the ground during the assault.
The Mexican continued to apply the same game plan until the end of the fight to retain his WBA, WBO, WBC and IBF belts.
Alvarez was originally scheduled to face Jermall Charlo, Jermell’s twin brother. The identity of his opponent changed at the end of June, however, when Jermall said he needed more time to prepare. Alvarez finally turned to his twin Jermell.
