Restaurant Amber Garden in Amstelveen is the place if you are looking for special dishes from Northern China in an elegant setting. Extremely attentive and loving service, fine dining dishes with authentic flavors that are presented as works of art: we were extremely pampered! Really worth it for lovers of Chinese cuisine, but really for everyone: you really want to try this.
Restaurant Amber Garden in Amstelveen: fine dining Chinese restaurant you must try!
We are fans of Amber Garden! It is not without reason that they are on our list of favorite Chinese restaurants in Amsterdam. And okay, it’s a bit of cycling to Amstelveen, but then you come to a restaurant that you won’t find in Amsterdam. We are welcomed by knowledgeable waiters, dressed in smart suits, who courteously guide us to our table. Inside it is light and modern, which already gives a taste of what awaits us in terms of dishes. But don’t let this luxury fool you: Amber Garden’s prices are still very good, and you really get quality in return.
Chinese delicacies and spicy wontons
We start with a glass of prosecco and be surprised by the tastiest dishes on the menu. We start immediately with one of the highlights of our dinner: the Iberico ribs in a sweet sauce with tutti frutti. A delicious sticky sauce, tender, slowly cooked spareribs: really delicious! Next we get an interesting combination of two dishes. We taste a clear chicken soup, slowly drawn in a steam oven, creating a delicious full chicken soup flavor. It immediately reminds us of grandma’s chicken soup: you can taste how much love and attention it was made with! This soup contains chicken, but also fish stomach. This is a real delicacy in Asia, because it contains a lot of collagen, which is very good for your skin. In addition to this soup, we are served wontons with chili oil, filled with iberico. These taste nice and spicy, and are served in a broth that is very flavorful. A nice contrast with the chicken soup!
Gong Bao Chicken like you won’t taste anywhere else in the Netherlands
Think you know Gong Bao Chicken? Think once more! At Amber Garden they prepare this according to the northern cooking style from Beijing, and you won’t get it like this anywhere else in the Netherlands. Sweet and sour are perfectly balanced, you get a little smoky touch from the dried pepper and the crunchy peanuts: this dish really made us happy. Amber Garden originated in Beijing, so the owners and chefs also come from that region. This means that the flavors are really different from most other Chinese restaurants we know! We also taste a modern preparation of duck: first marinated in tea, then slowly dried and steamed, which gives it a very exciting taste.
Michelin-worthy Black Angus Shortribs at Amber Garden Amstelveen
Amber Garden has a mention in the Michelin guide and the more dishes we taste, the better we understand why. Everything is prepared with great care, the flavors are perfectly balanced, and the plates are often real works of art. We also see this when we eat a combination of two of their dishes with Black Angus Beef. The plate is beautifully presented and we can’t stop talking regarding how incredibly tasty it is. We eat the Australian Black Angus Shortribs, which are very slowly cooked in sweet soy sauce. Wow, the meat really melts in your mouth and the taste is so full and warm, it makes you instantly happy! What a contrast to the short ribs that are marinated and then grilled: these are breaded with a spicy combination of salt, chili and cumin and really give a flavor kick. Everything is kept in balance by crispy organic cauliflower florets and a white fungus tempura, and paired with delicious red wines.
Yogurt jelly with osmanthus honey and peach tree resin
Our evening ends wonderfully with a special dessert: yoghurt jelly with pieces of mango, osmanthus honey and – very special – peach tree resin. This resin also forms a kind of yelly and immediately gives the dessert something extra! And just when we think this evening is at its peak, we get one last treat with our coffee: freshly baked egg tarts. Still warm, with delicious buttery, airy puff pastry and a delicious creamy filling. We really enjoyed Amber Garden: highly recommended!
