Second division soccer team Hertha BSC lost once morest FC St. Pauli. On Saturday evening, Pal Dardai’s team lost 1:2 (0:1) once morest Hamburg. After eight match days, the Berliners still have nine points.

Floodlights and a well-filled stadium

It was the first meeting in a competitive game for Hertha BSC and FC St. Pauli in seven years. At that time, the Berliners won 2-0 with coach Pal Dardai on the sidelines. The new meeting was watched by 66,113 spectators in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Also there: around 12,000 FC St. Pauli fans who traveled with them. Against this backdrop, Hertha BSC also said goodbye to Kevin-Prince Boateng, who ended his career in the summer.

Neither coach made any changes to the starting lineup. The guests started once more without their injured captain Jackson Irvine, but he was back in the squad. Marcel Hartel wore the captain’s armband for him.

The guests press with success

In the starting phase, both teams sorted themselves out and felt each other out rather cautiously. The guests had their first shot on goal following ten minutes. Oladapo Afolayan dribbled past two Berliners on the right and passed to Hartel, who fired from the box. But the ball went out to the right of the goal. The first signal from Berlin came in the 16th minute: Andreas Bouchalakis played a corner. Fabian Reese took over the standard task, but passed directly to the feet of Hartel, who counterattacked. The Hertha defense stayed alert and managed to quickly stop the action.

A free kick for FC St. Pauli from 20 meters from the right side initiated a series of attacks (23rd). Hartel played a cross to the penalty spot, which was cleared by the Berliners. After that, the Hamburg team pressed further and further in front of the Berlin goal. A little later they were successful. Elias Saad got past two defenders on the left and played the ball into the center to Johannes Eggestein. He turned on his own axis and finished with his right. Ernst managed to block the ball, but mightn’t get a hold of it. Eggestein followed up and scored to make it 1-0 for St. Pauli (25th).

Controversial penalty decision

After half an hour the hosts had their first chance. Hertha BSC managed to break the Hamburg bracket. On the right side of the penalty area, Marten Winkler played a high cross in front of the goal. There Smail Prevljak went into the air and headed towards the box. But Nikola Vasilj kept the ball (32′).

Shortly followingwards there were discussions regarding a possible penalty for the Kiezkickers following Eric Smith went down in the Berlin penalty area following a kick from Bouchalakis (35th). Referee Deniz Aytekin first pointed to the penalty spot, then looked at the scene once more on video evidence and retracted his decision. Fabian Hürzeler protested on the sidelines and was shown a yellow card. The visitors remained in control for the rest of the first half and went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Pale Hertha gets some color

Pal Dardai reacted to the deficit and brought on Gustav Christensen for Winkler. But the game still belonged to the Kiezkickers. Saad used his central position in front of the goal for a chance to make it 2-0 in the 49th minute. However, his low shot went just wide of the goal to the left.

The Berliners only had a few chances. Haris Tabakovic, who was successful in the previous games, came into the penalty area from the left side and shot. However, Smith was able to block in time (55th). The hosts changed once more: Bilal Hussein came on for Jeremy Dudziak (59th). Hertha BSC became a little more active, but didn’t manage to break free. Instead, Eggestein drew attention once more. The striker took a shot from a half-left position and regarding 22 meters away. The ball hit the crossbar but didn’t go in (65).

Both coaches decided to make a double change. Dardai brought on Bence Dardai for Michal Karbownik and Derry Scherhant for Smail Prevljak. Hürzeler sent Irvine onto the field for his comeback. Connor Metcalfe went down for that. Andreas Albers also came on for Eggestein (71′).

FC St. Pauli extends its lead, Hertha follows up

The guests launched another series of attacks. Afolayan played a cross from the right into the center. Hartel rose into the air without much pressure and headed once morest the crossbar in his first attempt. Metcalfe got the ball and passed to Afolayan, who passed back to Hartel. His header made the crossbar wobble once more and the ball went into the goal to make it 2-0 (74th).

Fabian Reese gave a rare sign of life for the Berliners with a long-range shot from 18 meters. But Vasilj parried the attempt from the half-left position (78th). Pal Dardai made his final substitution and brought on Florian Niederlechner for Haris Tabakovic (80′). Shortly followingwards, Hertha actually managed to defend themselves effectively. Irvine lost the ball in the build-up to Bouchalakis, who passed it back to Scherhant. The 20-year-old hit the bottom left corner safely to make it 1-2 (83′).

In the final phase, however, FC St. Pauli remained in control, although Hertha rushed forward, took advantage of their substitutions (Philipp Treu for Saad and Etienne Amenyido for Afolayan) and secured victory.

The reactions

Haris Tabakovic (Hertha BSC): “They were more present and more grippy from the first minute. They were also clearer regarding their scoring chances. The first half was nothing at all. We weren’t brave enough.”

Johannes Eggestein (FC St. Pauli): “Even though we made it a bit exciting at the end, I think it was an all-round successful evening for the team and me personally. And that’s why we’re all very satisfied.”

Toni Leistner (Hertha BSC): “Of course you can’t defend everything, but I think that we were more aggressive in the duels in the second half, that we also forced the occasional loss of the ball and maybe we would have had the same way in the first half should play.”
