Defense Minister Tanner congratulates the young officers
Vienna (OTS) – On Saturday, September 30, 2023, 78 professional and 43 militia officers, including 10 women (9/1), were ceremoniously accepted into the force at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt. Lieutenant’s Day took place in the presence of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner. After the ceremony, a large parade was held for the first time in honor of the new officers on Grazer Strasse in front of the castle.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “I congratulate you on the achievements you have achieved at the military academy over the past three years. You have chosen a great but also a responsible profession. You should use all your strengths for the security of the Republic of Austria; The conditions for this were created in these three years. I wish you the very best.”
The new officers were trained to become lieutenants over a period of four years. Career officers also receive university-level training with the bachelor’s degree program in “Military Leadership.” Semesters and internships abroad not only enable you to expand your professional skills, but above all promote intercultural competence. A characteristic that is very important with regard to multinational operations abroad.
The militia officers completed the first twelve months of their training as active soldiers in the Austrian Armed Forces. Together with the career officers, they learned the basics for their chosen career. They then returned to their professional lives and also completed their training to become lieutenants in militia exercises within three more years.
As part of a collaboration with the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, four soldiers from Bosnia and Herzegovina completed their officer training at the Theresian Military Academy this year. These four young officers from Bosnia and Herzegovina are happy to be present as guests of their Austrian comrades.
A parade was held once more this year in honor of the new officers. Around 1,000 soldiers paraded with 60 wheeled vehicles, 90 armored vehicles and around 20 aircraft on or over Grazer Strasse in front of the castle. There was also a supporting program for the armed forces to attack and experience. Military equipment such as the “Ulan” infantry fighting vehicle, the “Leopard” 2 main battle tank, the “Pandur” personnel carrier and the BvS10 “Hägglunds” universal all-terrain vehicle might be seen up close. Soldiers also provided first-hand insight into their everyday lives and training and were available to answer questions regarding careers in the armed forces.
Austria’s military academy
The Theresian Military Academy is the training center and home of the officers of the Austrian Armed Forces. It was founded on December 14, 1751 by Maria Theresa with the mission “Make capable officers and honest men out of them” and is therefore the oldest active military academy in the world dedicated to officer training.
The current tasks of the military academy are: the training of troop officers, further training of officers and school education with the operation of the Federal Commercial Academy for Leadership and Security. When it comes to troop officer training, you can choose between two courses. Both the technical college bachelor’s degree program “Military Leadership” and the technical college bachelor’s degree program “Military Information and Communication Technology Leadership” are offered.
