Tai Lam Tunnel and Yuen Long Approach Road will increase tolls starting from next month. The actual increase in preferential usage fees for many vehicles ranges from $2 to $16, including an increase of $3 for private cars and taxis, with a new fee of $58. Yuan, motorcycles add 2 yuan, and the new fee is 28 yuan. As for light to heavy trucks, 5 to 6 yuan are added respectively, and the new fees range from 64 to 79 yuan.
The authority submitted a document to the Legislative Council stating that the exclusive company informed the government that it believed that the traffic volume of the Tai Lam Tunnel and Yuen Long Approach Road, known as “Route 3 (Country Park Section)”, in the past two years has been affected by the COVID-19 epidemic and the opening of roads in recent years. Affected by factors such as free alternative routes and rising operating costs, it is necessary to improve the revenue situation to maintain stable operations. Therefore, starting from the 8th of next month, the discounts provided for all vehicle categories will be reduced, but each additional axle for trucks with more than two axles will be reduced. The axle free arrangement will remain unchanged.
The authorities stated that the government’s approval is not required for franchised companies to adjust fees within the level permitted by law. The government has continued to urge franchised companies to fully consider factors such as public affordability when formulating charging strategies. The franchise of the Tai Lam Tunnel will expire in May 2025 and will subsequently become a government tunnel. The authorities have set up a working group to prepare for the takeover and are reviewing future toll levels.
