Carlos Ayllón and His Band: Reviving 90s Latin Pop and Peruvian Music

His first childhood memories are linked to songs and musical instruments. After experimenting with the cajon and congas, while still a child, Carlos Ayllón learned to play the drums and bass. At the age of 13 he joined his famous mother’s band as a conguero player. And his first group “Sarandango”, of Peruvian and tropical music, was created, a few years later, in the United States. This time, Eva Ayllón’s eldest son bursts into the Peruvian music scene with a new and risky proposal.

“I arrive with my own band (Carlos Ayllón and his band), ready to promote my musical career in Peru, not only as a percussionist but also as a Latin pop music singer. I have summoned seven renowned musicians. It is a very nineties bet, because, for me, musically speaking, in the 90s there was an explosion of great bands, whose music we want to bring back,” he highlights.

Ayllón’s musical influences are not restricted to Creole music. He grew up listening to ‘Zambo’ Cavero, Óscar Avilés and Lucila Campos; but also to groups like Frágil, Sangre Púrpura and Arena Hash.

“And I shared the stage a lot of times with Libido, Zen, TK and Raúl Romero, whom I love very much. He has a privileged voice. He is one of my heroes. I admire him. Then I got involved with hip hop, rap, reggae, salsa, chicha and Latin bands,” Ayllón highlights.

The group will have its debut concert this October 5, at La Estación de Barranco.

“That day Pablo Saldarriaga, a great friend of mine, will accompany us. We’ve made music together before. For their program, we did a version of ‘Triciclo Perú’ with toy instruments. There will also be Angie Chávez (former Son Tentación) and my mother, with whom I am going to sing new wave fused with jazz,” he anticipates.

Family heritage

The 37-year-old musician grew up surrounded by stages, musical instruments and famous friends of Eva Ayllón. Among the most unforgettable memories of his childhood, he mentions the day they had dinner at his, Alberto Cortez, Pedro Aznar and Facundo Cabral’s home; in addition to the handwritten cards that the Cuban singer Celia Cruz sent him for her birthday.

“I have thousands of incredible memories, but not just as a child. Every time I remember the show for my mother’s 50th birthday in San Marcos, I want to cry with emotion. It was too much for everyone,” he agrees.

And as is often the case with the children of many famous people, Carlos also carries the weight of his last name. “There are those who write to me to tell me that I am more than enough like my mother. At first I responded, now I don’t pay attention.” It also stands out that between Eva Ayllón and the former volleyball player Natalia Málaga there is a working relationship and a very solid friendship. “I don’t see anything strange between them, as is implied, I consider them to be very good friends. Unfortunately, gossip sells,” she emphasizes.

The woman of his life

For a year and three months, Carlos has been living an intense romance with the actress Mónica Torres, whom at some point in his life, he considered a “platonic” and “unattainable” love.

“I saw her for the first time on Leyla Chihuán’s son’s birthday. It was in 2013. I told her how beautiful and talented she seemed to me. Then I traveled to the United States. I had two beautiful children whom I adore with all my soul. They are my little motor. I made my life, but my relationship didn’t work out. So, I took a new direction. I got Monica’s phone number and wrote to her. And last year when I came to Lima on tour, I decided to stay to conquer it,” she details.

Monica is much more than a partner for me. She is the person who understands me, motivates me and helps me be the best version of myself. She awakened in me that vibe of having my own things, that vision of always walking straight. She is always by my side and when I travel I am thinking regarding her, what she is doing. Everything is for me. On top of that, it cooks deliciously. With her I confirmed that dreams come true and that those movie loves exist,” he emphasizes.
