Since Saturday morning at 4:10 a.m., no CFF or BLS trains have passed through Biel station due to work on the contact lines. Dozens of buses have been made available to travelers who must expect longer journeys of 15 to 30 minutes.
Mainline and regional rail traffic is interrupted throughout this weekend as well as the weekend of October 7 and 8 at Bienne station. This measure is necessary to renew the contact lines.
Access to the platforms was closed by fences and some 150 people were mobilized to help and guide travelers. Although rail traffic is at a standstill, the shops and lighting in the station remain functional.
50 cars de substitution
In collaboration with the City of Bienne, the SBB has set up a replacement offer of around 50 coaches, some of which are registered in the cantons of Lucerne or Zurich.
The SBB carries out this work on weekends, because according to their estimates, there are a third fewer commuters. But this closure occurs partly during school holidays. So to ease discontent and make travel easier, the SBB transports luggage and bicycles free of charge throughout Switzerland, including to Geneva and Zurich airports.
The return to normal is scheduled for the start of service Monday at 4:10 a.m.
