LAKE WACCAMAW, N.C. — It took 31 tries, but East Columbus finally defeated South Columbus in a football game.
By a 22-21 score, East Columbus beat South Columbus for the first time in school history on Friday night, improving the Gators’ record once morest South Columbus to 1-30.
East Columbus led 14-8 at halftime, but South Columbus came back in the second half. The Stallions took a 15-14 lead in the third quarter, then Logan Todd scored a 30-yard touchdown. South Columbus went for the two-point conversion to try and make it a two-score game with 8:48 left, but the attempt failed and the Stallions led 21-14.
But East Columbus had plenty of time left. Davonte Marshburn scored a one-yard touchdown with 1:25 left. That made the score 21-20, and the Gators opted to go for the two-point conversion and the win.
Ryan Cobb crossed the goal line on the two-point try to put East Columbus back on top 22-21.
Then, on South Columbus’ ensuing offensive possession, Cobb intercepted a pass from Stallions quarterback Jared Caines, sealing the win for East Columbus.
East Columbus is now 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Waccamaw 1A/2A Conference. The Gators will travel to Whiteville next week.
South Columbus drops to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play following its loss to the Gators. The Stallions return to action next week as well, as they travel to West Columbus.
