WFM: management is an alternative for logistics companies

Logistics is present in different sectors of the industry, and its main function is to provide resources and tools for carrying out business activities. Nowadays, with digitalization, it is possible to count on systems that optimize this type of service. Among them is WFM (Workforce Management). The solution can assist logistics operations by ensuring that the company follows an appropriate process for sizing teams, thus avoiding excess labor (high cost) or lack thereof (low quality of service) at different times of the day, week and throughout the year .

The logistics sector, in fact, contributes to economic growth in an order of magnitude comparable to sectors considered giants in the Brazilian economy. The statement is part of a balance carried out by Abol (Brazilian Association of Logistics Operators), which reveals that, in comparison to other sectors of the economy, the sector represents 2% of the Brazilian GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in terms of gross revenue, which makes it necessary to implement systems that collaborate with the effectiveness of the processes

In this context, Dagmar Barbosa, CEO of Lobtec – a partner company in the SISQUAL WFM logistics solution – observes that there is a lot of opportunity for improvement in the Brazilian logistics scenario, because, despite having matured and become professional in recent years, [o setor] it is still “far below” what is found in other countries of similar dimensions to Brazil.

That’s where, in Barbosa’s view, technology tools like WFM can be strategic in planning, sizing and monitoring people’s employment. “WFM helps companies define HeadCount, Work Schedules and redeploy staff on a daily basis, when we know that not everything goes according to plan”, he points out.

It is estimated that Brazil’s logistics costs amount to around 13% of GDP, points out the expert. This amount is relevant and, at the same time, suggests room for optimization. “In more developed countries, the cost is much less representative, for example, in the United States it is estimated to be around 6% to 7%”, he compares.

High cost and labor

Barbosa highlights that the high cost is due to several reasons, such as poor transport infrastructure, high fuel costs and high tax burden. “These issues are difficult to change, as they depend on coordinated government actions, but there is a lot that a company can do to reduce its logistics costs and ensure competitiveness and higher margins.”

The CEO of Lobtec emphasizes that in Brazil a considerable part of the composition of logistics costs is related to labor. “The correct estimation (planning) of headcount at the right times (when the service flow is high) and monitoring the operation by relocating employees in a timely manner are essential to guarantee a healthy, profitable and scalable operation”.

A WFM tool can also help when unforeseen events occur and it becomes necessary to relocate people. This is because the leader or manager will have visibility into the movements he can make, without violating labor legislation and union rules, as Barbosa explains.

By occupying 4th position in the services ranking, according to a recent survey by entity, the logistics sector is also responsible for 2% of the total number of people employed in the country. Its strong presence in the economy – which results in the generation of 2 million jobs (direct and indirect), opens space for the development and application of techniques and tools capable of sustaining the operation chain by organizing the workforce.
