Madame Nielsen’s Bowie Transformation in Graz

The silhouette of a slim figure coming closer out of the darkness, blue light, music that seems familiar and yet alienated – no, it’s not an alien, it was Madame Nielsen who landed at the Orpheum in Graz on Friday evening. As part of the steirischer herbst, “The Silver Dollar Duke Royal Flash Gala” dealt with the figure of David Bowie, approaching, moving away, changing the appearance without ever being able to grasp it.

Madame Nielsen is even less clearly classifiable as a fictional character than was the androgynous appearance of David Bowie, so the preoccupation of one fictional character with another proved fruitful. Nine songs by the multi-layered singer and musician formed the basis for imaginative alienations that didn’t stop at the lyrics. The creatures that Madame Nielsen put on stage were fragile, charismatic, and ultimately bizarre.

The transformation from an alien surrounded by blue light to Death in a top hat and black coat or to a fragile, steely rock star with a guitar was fluid but still unpredictable and exciting. Finally, what remains is the bony, almost naked figure, which moves like an insect and produces frog sounds. A character mightn’t be further away from any gender or species classification. What comes last remains unclear – death, or transformation into another being?

Madame Nielsen works as an artist, author and singer, writes books and is part of the band “The Nielsen Sisters”. As part of “Das Beckwerk” she took part in interventions in states of emergency in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Egypt. In 2014 she intervened as “Miss World” in Ukraine.
