Reconsidering Canada’s Climate Change Strategy: Exploring Alternative Measures and Impact on Population

If we magically managed to remove all of Canada’s gasoline and diesel vehicles from the roads, it would be a miraculous blessing for the planet. The problem is that this impossible feat would represent in CO2 emissions what China emits in… 56 hours!

In other words, if China increased its emissions by half of 1%, it would completely cancel out Canada’s gigantic effort. This is the reminder made by a retiree from the business world in a text from National Post.

Note to reader: The author, Gwyn Morgan, spent part of her life in the oil industry. This confession made, you can stop reading immediately and call an exorcist for help. You can also explore an alternative vision, which does not deny climate change, but which seeks to avoid unnecessary sacrifices for our population.

Getting poorer

This might be of particular concern to you if you are suffering from the rising cost of living. The government’s current approach, fuel surcharges, contributes to inflation. We buy fuels and especially goods transported using them.

We are increasingly aware that these policies hit low-income households hard. Left-wing parties claim to defend the poor while promoting aggressive climate measures. They forget to mention the impact of one on the other.

It is people from higher income classes who buy beautiful, well-equipped electric cars. Low-income people buy basic, gas-powered models with 150,000 km on the clock.

By analyzing the new regulation on clean fuels, the Parliamentary Budget Officer demonstrated, with supporting figures, the effect on the poorest in society. They will have to devote a greater share of their income to obtaining so-called “clean” petroleum products. Almost double the richest.

Coal-fired power plants

Meanwhile, China has announced the construction of two new coal-fired power plants every week for the past year. Not oil or natural gas, coal! The worst source! Although China claims to be the champion of electric cars, its emissions have doubled in less than 20 years.

Morgan therefore asks the question: is the punitive approach of overtaxing Canada’s population optimal in the current global context? Are we making our population suffer for a limited effect on the global climate change situation?

So Morgan makes this suggestion. Rather than slaughtering its population with the cost of fuel, Canada should include other measures in its strategy, for example a surcharge on Chinese manufactured products that come out of these ultra-polluting factories.

Canada would thus do two things. Put pressure on a more polluting country and shift our purchases towards local products made from clean electricity.

In any case, a survey this week shows that with the punitive approach, the population is giving up.
