Sinaloa, where one of the largest drug cartels in Mexico operates, has for decades been the scene of armed confrontations between rival groups or clashes between criminals and security forces.
Mexico has more than 420,000 dead and some 100,000 missing, most attributed to conflicts between criminal organizations, since the launch of a controversial military anti-drug offensive in December 2006.
