Washington ∙ A traffic police officer was removed from patrol duty following he spoke sarcastically regarding the death of Indian student Jahnavi Kandula (23) who was hit by a speeding police vehicle. Daniel Oderer, who is also the vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, was charged with withholding pay.

This is following the Indian Consulate in San Francisco and the Indian community in the US came forward to protest the incident and demand a detailed investigation. Jahnavi, a native of Andhra Pradesh and a graduate student at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus, was hit by a police vehicle while crossing the street on January 23.

The controversy started when the audio recording of a phone call to the president of the Audier Guild, who was part of the investigation team, was released earlier this month. The officer laughed at the student’s death and said that the policeman who drove the car did not commit any crime. Also, she might be heard saying that being a student was not a big problem and all the legal proceedings might be settled with a check of $11,000.
