Dengue: new cases in mainland France, how do you know if you have the disease?

2023-09-29 13:57:27

New case of dengue fever diagnosed in Rennes this week; suspicion of two cases of indigenous dengue fever in Drôme according to a press release published this Friday by the ARS, the Regional Health Agency; mosquito control operation on the night of September 26 to 27 near Carcassonne following a case of dengue… long confined to tropical regions, dengue is gaining more ground in France each year.

Global warming favors the spread of dengue fever

Dengue is a disease transmitted to humans by mosquitoes of the Aedes genusmainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, the “famous” tiger mosquito. However, climate change with rising temperatures in Europe played a key role in the progression of the tiger mosquito outside its historical territories. An inexorable progression (in 2023, 71 out of 96 departments will be colonized by the tiger mosquito) which is logically accompanied by a spread of diseases transmitted by Aedes.

What is an indigenous case? an imported case?

Many cases in mainland France affect people returning from tropical countries, who therefore contracted the disease there during their trip. We then talk regarding imported cases

.But if this sick person is bitten once more in France by a tiger mosquito, it carries the virus and can transmit it by biting other people. The transmission chain is then activated on metropolitan soil. This is what we call a cas autotochtone : the person contracted the disease without having traveled to a tropical area in the 15 days preceding the appearance of symptoms. This is also why mosquito control operations are carried out when a case of this type is confirmed. Limit the proliferation of mosquitoes to reduce the transmission of diseases.

What are the symptoms of dengue?

Dengue fever can manifest itself with the following symptoms:

  • high fever (40°C),
  • chills,
  • joint pain,
  • nausea or vomiting,
  • headache,
  • fatigue,
  • measles-like rash…

Please note: dengue is asymptomatic in 50 to 90% of cases.

There is a serious form, called hemorrhagic, fortunately rarer: 1% of dengue cases worldwide.

The diagnosis must be confirmed by biological analyzes ; aimed at searching for the virus directly (RT-PCR, viral culture) or indirectly by searching for specific antibodies (serology).
