Hikers discovered an injured ibex in Haute-Savoie, France.

The animal had a crampons in its mouth.

It had to be anesthetized to save it.

Videos of hikers made the rounds on social media for weeks an ibex in the Dent d’Oche massif in Haute-Savoie, France. The animal appeared to be injured; there was a crampons in its mouth that had probably been left behind following a mountain tour. The clips were shared online, but little might be done to help the ibex – the animal might not be caught.

“We heard small metallic noises, it sounded like bells,” is how a hiker described the situation following an encounter with the ibex. «We were getting closer. At first I thought it was a tuft of grass, but when I looked closer I saw they were studs.” The man notified the local animal shelter.

Hikers reported the injured animal to the authorities

He wasn’t the only one who raised the alarm: other concerned people informed the nearest refuge and nature conservation associations from the region regarding the dramatic situation. The French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) was also contacted, as “20 Minutes” reports. Those responsible organized a joint operation to save the animal.

A first rescue attempt was started a week ago on Wednesday. Without success. The female ibex jumped away from the animal protection group, frightened. Six days later, three employees of the French Office for Biodiversity, accompanied by a veterinarian, attempted a second capture attempt.

Only the second attempt worked

After walking for several hours, the team discovered the female resting on a rocky outcropping with her kid. The rescuers approached carefully and anesthetized the animal with an injection dart. As the female was immobilized, the vet began to pull out the crampons. As it turned out, a link of the high-speed equipment was caught in one of the animal’s teeth.

As soon as the Capricorn mother woke up, she ran away with her boy, who had stayed away during the procedure.
