Al Dhafra, 29 September / WAM / The Liwa Dates Festival and Auction, in its second session, provides a platform to introduce visitors to the stages of storing dates and the industries related to the palm tree through live paintings made by Emirati fingers in the heritage village at the site of the festival, which is organized by the Cultural and Heritage Festivals and Programs Management Committee in Abu Dhabi and in cooperation with the Heritage Club. The festival’s heritage village includes 17 stations that tell stories regarding preserving and storing dates, a number of palm industries, popular foods related to dates, the mechanism of purifying dates, washing them, soaking them, drying them, bandaging them, and storing them, in addition to how to make coffee from date pits, and all industries related to dates.
The Heritage Village presents stories regarding the authentic Emirati heritage, as the visitor sees grandmothers and mothers making traditional crafts with their fingertips, and at the same time they introduce the festival visitors to the Emirati heritage, which confirms the sustainability of the heritage and its transmission between generations.
The heritage protectors explain the nature of each stage and craft. Date purification is the first process of producing dates, as during this process damaged, discolored and fouled dates are excluded following separating them from the raw ones. The dates to be prepared for storage are collected, and then the dates are washed with water to ensure their cleanliness and get rid of layers of dust. And the dust that accumulated on its surface during fruiting.
The stages of preparing dates for preservation and storage continue. After washing them, the soaking stage comes by placing the dates in water and submerging them well. This depends on the type of dates to be dried and stored. This is followed by drying the dates, where the dates are collected and placed on the saddles to get rid of excess water following soaking.
The heritage village informs its visitors of the method of making coffee from date pits from the moment they are taken out, washed, roasted, ground, boiled and placed in the pot, as well as the making of the rosary “rosary” where the date pits are collected, cleaned and sorted so that their seeds are of uniform size to make rosary beads from them.
Dishes of Emirati cuisine are also prepared, of which dates are a main part, such as “Al-Mamrousa”, “Al-Sha’thaa”, and “Al-Bathaha”. The dates are preserved in the container, and girls and mothers are taught how to prepare, prepare and serve them.
