The Antwerp public prosecutor’s office has opened a judicial investigation into the dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Antwerp, said prosecutor spokesperson Kristof Aerts on Friday. A student reported inappropriate sexual behavior on her part to the university and the public prosecutor’s office decided to take up the matter on its own initiative.
The victim’s lawyer had estimated rather “Not necessary” to take legal action, while the university opened a disciplinary investigation into the teacher, suspended preventively for six months from his functions at the university and at the University Hospital of Antwerp.
Informed by press articles of the situation, the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office decided to open a judicial investigation in order to verify that the facts did not fall under criminal law. The prosecution wants to ensure that the dean did not take advantage of his position of authority to undermine the integrity of the victim.
