FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) – A drone sighting led to flight cancellations and delays at Frankfurt Airport on Thursday evening. Germany’s largest airport had to completely cease operations for 40 minutes, a spokeswoman for operator Fraport said on Friday morning. The drone was first spotted shortly following 8 p.m. and there was no further takeoff. After a second sighting, service was completely disrupted around 8:30 p.m. until approximately 9:10 p.m. The spokesperson clarified that there were still repercussions this Friday.
Fraport reported 20 canceled flights Thursday evening, but it is unclear whether all of those flights were attributable to the drone. There were also many delays, but the spokesperson might not give the exact number. Some flights have been postponed until this Friday. The airport operator called on passengers to check the status of their flights and get to the airport early. Due to increased passenger numbers, waiting times may be longer.
A spokesperson for the federal police department responsible for the airport also confirmed the sighting and the resulting disruptions on Friday morning. The airport’s website no longer listed canceled flights as of Friday morning./esz/DP/tih
